Psychosocial needs in palliative care

Understanding and responding to the psychosocial needs of patients at the end of life is central to compassionate, holistic care. A newly released video resource from the Sacred Heart Biography Service offers an exploration of this space, highlighting the therapeutic impact of biography work and the vital role of social workers in palliative care.

Featuring experienced palliative care social workers Anna Laverty-Wilson and Sam Furlong, the resource includes three videos: two brief excerpts (each under two and a half minutes) and a longer, in-depth discussion (just under 30 minutes). Together, they provide an insight into how storytelling, identity, and connection shape the end-of-life experience.

The Therapeutic Power of Biography

One of the standout themes in this resource is the therapeutic benefit of biography work, the process of helping patients share and document their life stories.

In this short excerpt, Anna and Sam describe how storytelling becomes a meaningful intervention. Patients are given the opportunity to:

  • Be heard and communicate what could be their legacy, reflecting on their life journey
  • Connect with other human being that is interested in their story
  • Experience validation and that their lives have had a meaning for others

Biography work is not just about recording events, it’s about acknowledging the person behind the patient. It transforms care into a deeply human exchange.

Creating Space for Meaningful Conversations

Equally important is the emotional space for these conversations to occur.

Watch To appreciate the significance of this space (2:25): https://youtu.be/jpd62ux2fNc

This excerpt emphasises how biographers are often present during emotionally intense conversations and how important is to create a safe space in which their clients can be vulnerable and have these emotions acknowledged.

For a more comprehensive exploration, the full-length video expands on these ideas, offering practical insights and professional reflections.
