NAIDOC Week 2026
- by Maria Lopez
- July 6, 2026
From 5–12 July 2026, communities across Australia will come together to celebrate National NAIDOC Week, a time to recognise and honour the rich history, vibrant cultures, and remarkable achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s theme, 50 Years of Deadly, marks a significant milestone. For five decades, NAIDOC Week has amplified the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, creating space for truth-telling, cultural celebration, resilience, and recognition. It is a powerful reminder of the enduring strength, leadership, and contributions of First Nations peoples to Australia’s past, present, and future.
Over the last 50 years, NAIDOC Week has evolved into one of Australia’s most important celebrations of First Nations culture and achievements. Each annual theme has reflected the priorities, challenges, and aspirations of the time, calling for justice, celebrating identity, honouring Elders, and strengthening connections to Country and community.
Why NAIDOC Week Matters
NAIDOC Week provides an opportunity for all Australians to learn about and engage with the world’s oldest continuing cultures. It encourages meaningful conversations, deeper understanding, and respect for the histories and traditions that have existed on this continent for tens of thousands of years.
It is also a time to celebrate achievements across education, sport, arts, science, business, leadership, and community service, while recognising the ongoing contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in every aspect of Australian life.
