Celebrating Identity Through Art

The “A Little Piece of Me” art project is a heartfelt tribute to children in paediatric palliative care, beautifully honouring the influences that shape the identities of children and adolescents supported by Paediatric Palliative Care teams at Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network and John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
These dedicated teams provide compassionate, specialised care for young people with life-limiting illnesses, offering vital support to patients and their families. Among their efforts, legacy and memory-making projects hold a special place, helping families preserve meaningful connections and memories during challenging times.
An initiative of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation Art Program, this unique project invites families to create photographic pixel portraits. Through a mosaic of small photos, these portraits form a larger image of the child or adolescent, symbolising the diverse and cherished elements that shape their identity.
Guided by the Paediatric Palliative Care teams, families collect photographs of people, places, and things that have been significant in their child’s life. These photos are then woven into a portrait by artist Andrew Christie, creating a powerful representation of the child’s life story.
The process is as meaningful as the result. Families reflect on their child’s journey and what matters most to them, while the final artwork captures the richness of their child’s life beyond their illness. These portraits are not only tangible keepsakes but also profound expressions of resilience, creativity, and love.
In celebrating each child’s individuality, “A Little Piece of Me” highlights the strength of families as they navigate uncertain times and underscores the vital importance of recognising the many facets of identity in children and adolescents. This project is a testament to the power of art in fostering connection, healing, and hope.
This exhibition is being held concurrently with displays at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Bear Cottage Manly and John Hunter Children’s Hospital.
This project is an initiative of Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation Art Program and is supported by The Nicholas Trust and Digi Direct.
