In recognition of their immeasurable impact and unwavering commitment, the volunteers from Bear Cottage have been honoured with the 2023 NSW Volunteer Team of the Year award by The Centre for Volunteering.
Bear Cottage Children’s Hospice provides palliative and supportive care to children with life limiting illnesses and respite for families. On any given day, care workers are supported by a team of up to ten volunteers, who dedicate their time, skills, and energy wherever it is needed.
Volunteers are part of the day to day operations and have contributed by:
-
- doing 5,000 loads of washing,
- making 1,500 visits to the children’s sensory room,
- preparing 14,000 meals,
- reading over 1,000 books to children,
- creating 3,000 pieces of art,
- doing 600 hours of administration work
- wrapping more than 100,000 gifts
- spent over 600 hours writing biographies
- driven 1,000 kilometres to pick up families from in and around Sydney
- and taken hundreds of end-of-life photographs.
Palliative Care NSW would like to congratulate the volunteers at Bear Cottage Children’s Hospice on this fantastic achievement. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication. You are making an important difference in the lives of many families and we are all grateful for your time and effort.
