Palliative Care Week was recognised across Western Sydney Local Health District with information stalls and activities that involved patients and visitors writing their thankyous to the “people at the heart of quality palliative care”.

A morning tea and education session was held at Westmead Hospital with allied health, social workers, doctors, and volunteers all sharing stories about the role they play in supporting people with a life limiting illness and their families.

Theresa from the Supportive Care Volunteer Service presented her experience volunteering at Westmead Hospital on ward C5C, which is a mixed ward for patients having curative treatment as well as patients under the Supportive and Palliative Care Team. Theresa offered insights into how important it is to be present for the patients and listen to what they want to talk about, but also the need to maintain boundaries so the she can continue to give emotional and social support, especially when she is often supporting distressed carers and patients.

At Auburn Hospital, Dr Sally Greenaway, Director of WSLHD Palliative Medicine, shared her experiences with medical students about how rewarding working in Palliative Care is for the doctors who make it their vocation. Auburn has a 15 bed Supportive and Palliative Care Unit that enables people in this area to access palliative care close to home.

The week of celebrations ended with the annual BBQ held at Mount Druitt Supportive and Palliative Care Unit with all visitors, patients, staff and volunteers enjoying delicious food provided by the Supportive Care Volunteer Service.

Kylie Clark, Volunteer Manager, said, “We have such a great team here in Western Sydney. This week really showcases the important work we do and highlights that people really are at the heart of palliative care.”
