The community of Parkes came together to attend the Parkes Palliative Care Expo this National Palliative Care Week.

The event was held in the Cooke Park Pavilion which was a great location enabling the public to mingle amongst the tables of information brought to share by representatives of the local community, legal, health, and social sectors.

After a Welcome to Country by Wiradjuri representative Charlie Oraha, guest speakers included Dr Louis Christie, Palliative Care Physician, Bernadette Orange, Transitional Nurse Practitioner Lachlan Palliative Care, Kate Bowman, Manager Volunteer Support Services Programme Palliative Care NSW, and Tony Fisher, Coordinator, Parkes Palliative Care Volunteers

Death and dying can be difficult to talk about but this event gave the local community a chance to really connect with the “people at the heart of palliative care” in Parkes – the doctors, nurses, social workers, volunteers, and many others.

Being able to have chat directly with the incredible people that make it all happen certainly goes a long way towards demystifying palliative care and feeling sure that you are in good hands when it comes to matters of life and death.

As well as being National Palliative Care Week it was also National Volunteer Week. After the speeches, Kate Bowman took the opportunity to award the Parkes Palliative Care Volunteers a Certificate of Recognition for Outstanding Achievement as a volunteer team.

Congratulations, team on your well deserved award.
