Palliative care skills as core requirements of aged care training

Palliative Care skills are now core requirements for aged care training.
Previously, palliative care was not a core component of education provided for those holding a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) and Certificate IV in Ageing Support. However, Skills IQ and the Australian Government have taken action to address this gap, implementing recommendations from Palliative Care Australia (PCA) and its members.
The inclusion of delivering care services using a palliative approach and provide loss and grief support as core requirements in aged care training, are crucial step towards delivering better care to vulnerable Australians and strengthening the workforce.
PCA and PCNSW welcomed such an important change to the education of future aged care professionals, as it supports recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety. Twelve of the Commission’s recommendations highlighted the need for palliative care to become an embedded practice within aged care, making palliative care training central to achieving that goal.
Palliative Care Australia (PCA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Camilla Rowland said “Research demonstrates that only one in 50 people in residential aged care have received palliative care, this change in training starts to address that failing in our system, and will add to people’s quality of life.”
