Scarlett Buckling and the Case of the Missing Pictures helps younger readers understand dementia through a heartfelt detective story, shaped by lived experience and dementia professionals.
The story follows twelve-year-old Scarlett Buckling, who adores detective work. When her beloved Gran goes missing, Scarlett faces a real-life mystery unlike any other. Gran’s memory is fading, leaving her confused and frightened as she searches desperately for something important – her missing pictures. With her loyal friend Bournemouth, Scarlett pieces together the clues, uncovering the emotional truth behind her grandmother’s fading memories.
Written by Mario Ambrosi, this cosy crime novel uses the intrigue of a classic detective mystery to gently introduce children to the topic of dementia in a sensitive and age-appropriate way. It highlights how fragments of personal history can be used to connect with someone living with dementia, making it a valuable resource for both families and educators.
“I’ve always been amazed at how key facts about someone’s life can be the clues that help care professionals provide the best care possible. A detective story seemed the obvious way to talk about it. I hope the book may even encourage some young people to consider a career working in care,” says the author.
Informed by the real experiences of families, care professionals, and people living with dementia, the book aims to help younger readers and their families navigate this complex and emotional subject and encourages understanding and empathy.
“I wrote Scarlett for a couple of reasons,” says Mario Ambrosi. “My uncle lived with dementia, and I know it affects so many families, but it can be really difficult to talk about. I have two kids of my own and wanted to help them understand what was happening and feel comfortable asking questions.”
