If you have some free time to help make a difference in someone’s life, the Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers Inc would like to hear from you.
The service lends a caring helping hand to those diagnosed with a life-ending illness, their carers, families or friends.
The service is free to access for those in the Dungog Shire who have been diagnosed with a life-ending illness and helps provide companionship, some practical tasks, transport to appointments, supply and launder of linen and supply of equipment.
Coordinator of Dungog Shire Palliative Care Volunteers Inc, Jennie Wilson, invited interested people to attend a training session to learn more about volunteering with the service.
A training course will start on Thursday, April 20 which will run for five weeks every Thursday.
“The course starts you from scratch learning about palliative care and what the role of the volunteer is,” she said.
“The course is only run every three years or so and it’s a great refresher too for our existing volunteers.”
Ms Wilson said people could come along to the training, meet other volunteers and learn more about the service with no obligation about whether they would continue to volunteer if it was not for them.
“Our volunteers come from all walks of life and we don’t offer nursing care so there is no need for that sort of experience. We are more of a friend that will pop in and have a cuppa, to help arrange transport or equipment to help you stay in your own home or to stay with a client while their carer pops down the street for example.”
Interested volunteers can register for the training course by emailing [email protected] or phone 49921644.
