Artificial Intelligence Framework
- by Maria Lopez
- March 26, 2026
NSW Health has released a framework to guide the responsible adoption of artificial intelligence (AI). Designed to complement existing national and state requirements, it will support sustainable innovation by ensuring the safe, ethical and effective use of AI across the health system.
This framework outlines a consistent, risk-based approach to using AI across the NSW public health system. It is guided by consumer-centred care, transparency, accountability and trust.
The framework identifies the laws and policies that apply to NSW Health, clarifies how existing AI policies should be applied in their context, and outlines additional considerations for AI projects. Its vision is to enable the responsible and equitable integration of AI to enhance health outcomes and workforce experience.
The framework is to be used as a practical guide, alongside existing NSW Health policies, to support the adoption and implementation of new digital technologies.
There are 7 priority areas, along with their supporting principles, policies, guidance and practical considerations for integrating AI across NSW Health. Consider these within the broader AI landscape, including state and national requirements:
- Consumers
- Workforce
- Privacy and security
- Governance and regulation
- Safety, ethics and quality
- Research and development
- Industry
