A beautiful love story: Wedding at Mount Druitt Hospital’s supportive and palliative care unit.

A beautiful love story was celebrated at Mount Druitt Hospital in Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) with a wedding celebration for a patient at the Supportive and Palliative Care Unit (PCU).
The event took place on a sunny day at the gardens of the PCU, where nurses created a beautiful atmosphere for Jo and John to celebrate their special day.
Kylie Clark, volunteer manager of Palliative Care, Supportive and Palliative Care Services at WSLHD said “Flowers were gifted, chairs and tables were arranged and decorations were supplied to make this very special event a moment for the happy couple to treasure.”
“It’s such a beautiful love story, full of love.”
John originally from the Philippines, was living in Sydney and travelled back to the Philippines for a holiday in January 2020 when met Jo, a primary school teacher. Friendship followed by romance endured a year and a half when in July 2021, Jo said YES to John!
Only a month later, unfortunately John was diagnosed with a rare colon cancer stage four.
After John undertook chemo, the PCU at Mount Druitt Hospital allowed them to have their wedding, performed by a celebrant and attended by family members, with staff respectfully giving them space whilst ensuring all care was provided as needed.
John passed away recently, surrounded by Jo who was there 24/7 until he passed.
These special celebrations can make a huge difference on patients and their families and carers. It is what makes a difference and in this case, Volunteers at the PCU at Mount Druitt Hospital made it happen.
