Every five years, the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts every person and household in Australia. Called the Census of Population and Housing, it is the most comprehensive snapshot of the country and tells the story of how we are changing. The next Census is on Tuesday 11 August 2026.

Every answer matters. Census data is used to inform decisions about transport, schools, health care, infrastructure and business. It also helps plan local services for individuals, families, and communities. Learn how Census data helps community groups, businesses and governments make important decisions HERE.

By recording your volunteering or adding Volunteer Coordinator as your occupation you help build the evidence needed to advocate for greater recognition, investment, and support for volunteering across the country.

The Census is compulsory. Everyone in Australia on Census night must be included on a Census form.

Most households should be receiving a letter from late July, with information on how to complete the census online. The government has a number of information sheets, here are a few:
