Dementia Care Training for Volunteers

Supporting people living with dementia requires compassion, patience, and the right knowledge. Volunteers play a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals experiencing memory and thinking challenges, particularly in aged care settings. Recognising this, the Dementia Care Training for Volunteers course has been developed to offer accessible, practical education that builds both confidence and capability in this important role.

Inside the Course: What You’ll Learn

The training is structured into seven practical modules, each designed to build a deeper understanding of dementia care:

  1. The Volunteer role
  2. Dementia and delirium
  3. Communication and person centred care
  4. Activities and the Montessori approach
  5. Understanding and responding to changed behaviours
  6. Safe walking with residents
  7. Mealtime assistance

Key Learning Outcomes

By completing the course, volunteers will:

  • Develop a solid understanding of dementia and delirium and how these conditions affect individuals.
  • Learn practical communication techniques.
  • Gain skills to create meaningful, person-centred engagement activities.
  • Understand the “why” behind behavioural changes and respond effectively.
  • Apply safe practices when supporting mobility and mealtime assistance.

In addition to this training, REMIplay™ is a free, interactive training game helping carers build confidence and practical skills for supporting people living with dementia. Through short, real‑life scenarios, volunteers can safely practise skills alongside ‘Remi’ the Wombat.

Whether you’re new to volunteering or looking to deepen your understanding, these tools are meaningful steps toward delivering compassionate, informed dementia care.
