When there are no words, there is music

“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain” – Bob Marley.

We’ve long understood the power of music to connect us, improve our emotional well-being, and boost our mood. Studies show that as well as helping to regulate our emotional states, reducing stress and anxiety, music is also an effective tool for modulating pain.

Whether you are a volunteer, a patient, a carer, or anyone else working in the end-of-life space, you recognise the emotional challenges that accompany end-of-life care. Listening to music is the perfect way to help you relax, process your emotions, and bring you closer to well-being.

This Part of Life Playlist is a thoughtfully curated collection of songs and podcasts designed to help people navigate the complex emotions surrounding death, grief, and healing. The collection serves as a compassionate companion, offering solace through lyrics that speak to love, memory, and resilience.

Hosted on Spotify and featured by the well-being initiative Part of Life, the playlist includes over 80 tracks that span genres and generations. You’ll find classics like “Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole alongside contemporary ballads such as Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” and Taylor Swift’s “Bigger Than The Whole Sky.”

In addition to music, the playlist includes podcasts featuring healthcare professionals, grief experts, and personal stories that destigmatise conversations around death and dying.
