NAIDOC Week: A final wish comes true
- by Kate Bowman
- July 6, 2025
NAIDOC Week 2025, from July 6 to 13, marks a significant milestone this year: 50 years of honoring the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This year’s theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, highlights the enduring resilience of First Nations communities and the part young leaders play in shaping a strong and vibrant future.
As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, we take this opportunity to acknowledge and honour the vital contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health workers across the state. Their dedication, compassion, and cultural leadership play a critical role in the well-being of the community.
In Western Sydney, where the highest percentage of indigenous people make their home, Senior Aboriginal Health Worker Nicole’s commitment to her palliative care patients goes far beyond the clinical. Nicole is featured in this video which shows how small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact on those living with life-limiting illness and their loved ones. Her empathy and determination help patients reconnect with Country and create cherished final memories.
Her actions, including rallying a team to help fulfil a palliative patient’s final wish, are a powerful testament to the theme of legacy and strength. Nicole’s work reflects the heart of what NAIDOC Week celebrates: community, culture, and care carried forward by the next generation of leaders.
Let us take this week to reflect, honour, and continue supporting the voices and contributions of First Nations peoples, not just during NAIDOC, but every day.
