Two students from Macquarie University are joining us this semester to work on our longitudinal research project – Snapshot 2026: A review of Palliative care Volunteering in NSW. 

Every four years, we engage every NSW palliative care volunteer services in research. Our aim is to provide an update on service provision and get a snapshot of the health of the sector. Our 2022 Snapshot was undertaken under the cloud of COVID restrictions with volunteer numbers at an all-time low. Knowing many services have been recruiting we look forward to mapping how much the sector has grown.  

Working with us on the research this time we have two student interns from Macquarie University, Shin Bhone (Mabel) Thant and Stella Blackett. They will be a part of the project the whole way through and this year we will be working on streamlining the survey questions. Mabel and Stella will be reaching out to Volunteer Managers over the next few weeks to book timeslots for the Snapshot survey interviews. We will need to speak to a representative from every palliative care volunteer service in NSW, so we thank you in advance for your cooperation. 

Please join me in welcoming our research team. I have every confidence in them and I’m sure that over this semester they will both learn a lot about planning and conducting social research, stakeholder engagement, data analysis, and report writing. 

Hi, my name is Stella and I’m currently studying a Bachelor of Social Sciences at Macquarie University. With this experience, I am really excited to learn more about the volunteer work provided for palliative care as well as expanding my knowledge on how important the quantitative and qualitative research is for bettering everyone involved. I am very excited for this new experience (photo right). 

Hi, my name is Shin Bhone (Mabel) and I’m studying Bachelor of Social Science at Macquarie University. I hope I will get experience with professional work settings, applied research, survey and work-related report writing as well as time management from my internship with Palliative care NSW. Although I’m a bit anxious about not being able to meet satisfactory outcomes, I’m very excited to expand my knowledge around quantitative and qualitative research and professional office related work environment (photo left).
