International Volunteer Day

Palliative Care NSW proudly supports International Volunteer Day (IVD) on 5 December 2024, a global celebration that highlights the essential role volunteers play in addressing worldwide challenges. This special day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the incredible work of volunteers who strengthen communities and drive positive social change, both locally and globally.

With millions of volunteers contributing their time and effort across Australia, IVD is a moment to celebrate their contributions and the profound impact they have on society. Volunteers play a pivotal role in tackling a wide range of issues, from supporting marginalized communities to promoting sustainability and advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Palliative Care NSW recognises the crucial role that palliative care volunteers play in offering comfort and support to individuals and families facing life-limiting illnesses. In NSW, there are over 1000 dedicated volunteers providing companionship, emotional support, and carer respite. They have time to spend and enhance the care experience for patients. Volunteering in palliative care is a meaningful way to make a positive and lasting impact.

UN Volunteers have developed valuable resources for International Volunteer Day, designed to inspire and encourage the recognition of volunteers’ hard work. These resources focus on the importance of volunteerism in ensuring a more inclusive and equitable world.

IVD is not only a chance for volunteers to be celebrated but also a time for organisations to promote volunteerism within their communities. NGOs, governments, and the private sector are all encouraged to use this day to share their values, raise awareness about the power of volunteer efforts, and inspire more individuals to get involved. Most importantly it is an opportunity let your volunteers know just how valued they are and thank them for being a part of your team.

Are you inspired to become a palliative care volunteer? Here at PCNSW we do not host volunteers ourselves. If you are looking to volunteer please use this location finder to find services in your area and contact them directly.
