Cosy Companion is a Sydney-based, youth-led initiative that encourages high school students to volunteer in aged-care homes and build genuine relationships with senior community members. The organisation’s mission is simple yet powerful: create meaningful connections between young people and older Australians through regular visits, conversations, and shared experiences. By sharing a cup of tea, listening to life stories, or participating in activities together, students can help brighten someone’s day while gaining valuable life lessons themselves.

According to Cosy Companion, one in six Australians is over the age of 65, and many seniors experience feelings of loneliness, particularly those living in residential aged care. The organisation was founded on the belief that young people can play an important role in tackling this challenge through empathy, companionship, and community engagement. The focus is on creating authentic human connections that benefit both volunteers and residents.

Making a Real Impact

The initiative has already demonstrated impressive results. Cosy Companion reports active collaborations with six organisations across more than thirteen nursing homes throughout Sydney. In addition, over fifty volunteers have connected with more than seventy elderly individuals, contributing over 150 volunteer hours led by students from six schools.

These numbers represent more than statistics, they reflect conversations shared, friendships formed, and moments of joy created for seniors who may otherwise have limited social interaction.
