Who here could benefit from a little inspiration?

Yesterday we held the first quarterly meeting for 2021 of the NSW Network of Managers of Palliative Care Volunteers. A big thanks to all of you able to Zoom in. For those who missed it the minutes will be available soon.

One of the biggest topics of discussion was the ongoing struggle so many services are having trying to re-establish some kind of “new normal” level of volunteering. Services may have lost volunteers and lost capacities to help their clients but the will to get things rolling again is strong. There are so many hurdles – fluctuating ground, risk-averse executives, policy on-the-fly, fatigue, but I continue to be impressed by the professionalism shown by Volunteer Managers across NSW and applaud their dedication.

Volunteers are such an important and vital part of any palliative care service. It is really hard to hear that family and carers are unable to make themselves a cuppa after spending a long night with a terminally ill loved one in a palliative care unit because the volunteers are not currently allowed in to keep the refreshment area stocked. I hope the decision makers in health services can recognise the important contribution volunteers make in this space and prioritise finding ways to allow volunteers to be included in policies and procedures which allow them to return to work with little delay.

With that in mind I thought we might all benefit from a little inspiration to help fan those flames of motivation. When you need a dose of inspiration for affirmation that your work matters, reading quotes for volunteerism is a good place to start.
