While we are aware that death and loss come to all of us, humans spend most of their time focused on living life. When confronted with the certainty of an impending death or the news of an illness that is certain to bring death, life takes on a very different focus. The very essence of palliative care volunteering is to be there providing support just as patients and carers are grappling with these challenging issues and attendant emotions.

With this in mind, in conjunction with educators from the Australian Centre for Grief and Bereavement, The Volunteer Support Services Programme is pleased to offer another professional development opportunity for palliative care volunteers and their managers. This free online workshop, ” Supporting those before and after a death” has been tailor-made to suit those working in the palliative care volunteering space.

Volunteers will learn how to better support those living with death or loss and how to help people prepare for these outcomes. They will be introduced to the concept of ‘living into loss’ which is the acknowledgment of grief or loss as they are occurring and finding ways to embrace the parts of life that still exist.  The workshop will also delve into how working with the dying impacts those providing support.
