The Western Sydney Supportive Care Volunteer Service recently welcomed 18 new recruits, including 8 who will commence their roles at Westmead Hospital.

They will provide much needed companionship and support to patients on the Medical/Oncology ward C5C at Westmead Hospital.

The new recruits bring to total number of these dedicated volunteers to 45 across WSLHD.

Supportive and Palliative Care Services volunteer manager Kylie Clark said volunteers work at Mt Druitt Supportive and Palliative Care Unit, Blacktown Hospital on Medical-Oncology ward A71, and Infusion Therapies as well as visiting clients at home.

“Patients and their families feel the volunteers’ duties complement and enhance the care being provided by the professional staff at the hospital,” she said. “Patients appreciate the volunteers being with them to offer hand massages, a listening ear and providing respite so carers can grab a break and a cuppa.”

The service is always looking for compassionate, understanding people who are able to dedicate up to four hours a week to help support patients and their families.

Volunteers need to be over the age of 18 and no formal qualifications are necessary.

Volunteers complete four days of training and ongoing support is provided. For further information contact the Volunteer manager, Kylie Clark on 0427 730 596 or email [email protected]
