Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

“I don’t want to be a burden on my loved ones”.

During our lives we spend a lot of time learning to be autonomous, to take responsibility, to be accountable, to be generous and to think about the needs of others before our own.

You may have heard someone at end of life say “I don’t want to be a burden”. You might feel the same way about how your own life will end, not wanting to burden others with your care.

But the nature of love is this: we are a burden on each other. I’m a burden on my loved ones, they are a burden on me.

We are not as autonomous as we might like to think, and we often need relationships more than we want to admit.

This season celebrate the burden that you are to those who love you by celebrating your love for them.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours.

Thank you to all the supportive and palliative care volunteers and managers for your contribution to 2018!

PS The Volunteer Support Services Programme will be closed from 5pm 14th December and we’ll be back in early January.
