Lighting the way for palliative care volunteering in Port Macquarie

With a nursing background and extensive experience in aged care and management Lynette Nilsson is more than ready for the challenge of taking on a team of 20 or so palliative care volunteers based in the Port Macquarie area.

Lynette is the Volunteer Coordinator based at the Port Macquarie Community Health Centre.

Her service supports local Palliative Care volunteers who are involved with the local Mid North Coast Cancer Institute located at the Port Macquarie Base Hospital, the Wauchope Palliative Care Unit and through home and community visiting in the Port Macquarie area.

Volunteers may be involved in one or more of these service areas.

Another group of volunteers from Hastings Home Hospice Inc are active in fundraising and financially supporting the work of palliative care in the local area.

Port Macquarie is part of the Hastings Macleay Clinical Network, which represents the southern sector of the Mid North Coast Local Health District. The Hastings Macleay Clinical Network includes Kempsey in the north and Laurieton/Camden Haven in the south.

The Palliative Care team includes a Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Nurse Specialist and supports about 75 patients at any given time.
