Goulburn’s volunteer manager has fresh ideas for palliative care

Involvement with nursing, social work, massage, aromatherapy and stress reduction. Goulburn Health Service volunteer manager comes well equipped for the challenges of her role.

Katherine Lee oversees the involvement of some 58 volunteers across the Goulburn Health Service campuses. This includes the Bourke Street Health Service, where a group of about eight palliative care volunteers support people as part of the oncology clinic, and also visit patients at home.

Her other volunteers include Pink Ladies, Chit Chat volunteers (social and emotional support), Dementia and Delirium volunteers and volunteers in the sub-acute rehabilitation unit.

Katherine admits the diversity of her volunteers keeps her busy for her 16 hours a week.

Since coming into the role 12 months ago Katherine has focussed on reviewing and updating their management systems. She is also involved in fundraising events at Bourke Street, and in the local Bereavement Support Project.

Having qualifications in aromatherapy and massage Katherine is also interested in bringing her knowledge of complementary therapies into the world of her volunteers. She has experience in using aromatherapy in stress reduction for staff working in aged care and community support roles and believes that this could benefit patients and family members.

Katherine is also introducing emotional awareness and reflective practice skills into her volunteers’ professional development, skills she has learnt to value after working with the Goulburn Health Service Social Work team.

We congratulate Katherine on the end of her first year in the role!
