Volunteers thanked for going the extra mile

South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) Palliative Care volunteers have gone above and beyond their roles of providing support to patients at their end of life by raising over $16,000 to purchase special beds for patients who wish to die at home.

Through fundraising efforts such as raffles and stalls for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, volunteers raised the money for patients who often require high quality palliative care services and urgent provision of equipment to enable and support their choice to die at home.

SWSLHD Palliative Care Manager, Janeane Harlum said she was extremely grateful for the efforts of the volunteers.

“Palliative care is specialist care provided for people living with a life limiting illness and for whom the primary goal is quality of life,” Ms Harlum said.

“The role of the palliative care volunteers is to support patients and their families by providing compassion, companionship and comfort and our volunteers have certainly gone beyond this by ensuring the patients are provided with the best care possible as they reach the end of their life, helping to make them as comfortable and content as possible.

“We are very grateful for our wonderful volunteers and for the amazing efforts they have gone to for our patients” she said.
