Threads of meaning in National Volunteer Week 2016

For National Volunteer Week we thought you might be interested in some touching and heart-warming comments left by people interested in volunteering. Gratitude, respect and appreciation often motivate people to consider volunteering. Thank you all that you do.

I am interested in becoming a palliative care volunteer. I lost my wife to breast cancer years ago and have always been so appreciative of the palliative care volunteers that spent time with her. Now my children have grown up, I have more time and it is something I am passionate about and I believe I would bring empathy to the role.

I’ve been interested in volunteering in the area of palliative care for a while now and I was wondering if you have some more information about requirements for volunteers. I have no palliative care experience, just a strong interest and respect for the work you guys do and a willingness to learn 🙂

My husband passed away…the doctors and other staff members were very kind to my husband and my family. In appreciation of the kindness I would like to help if it is needed.

I have had a number of experiences with those close to me dying, both adult and child. Several times I have been the caregiver, supporting close family (father; mother-in-law) and dear friend’s though their final journey and supporting the remaining family and friends. Each has been the most incredible privilege. I am told I have helped many people get through this most difficult of times. This is something I would like to explore doing on a voluntary basis.

I lost my mother to stomach cancer. The palliative care team were fantastic in helping us deal with the situation. I in turn would like to give back and help those families who may not have a large support system like we did.

National Volunteer Week runs from 9-15th of May 2016.
