Northern New South Wales’ Tweed Palliative Support (TPS) – the driving force behind the Wedgetail Retreat in the coastal hinterland – has won two categories, Best Community or Social Service and the Best Business in Tweed, at this year’s Tweed Shire Business Excellence Awards (BEATS).

BEATS said TPS had strongly presented successful and inspiring events, partnerships and advocacies achieved over the previous year, and its enormous fundraising efforts including its Murwillumbah op shops, to be able to open the Wedgetail Retreat community hospice.

“We are all absolutely thrilled to have won in our category and honoured to be named the ‘2015 Best Business in the Tweed’. Although the application covered our achievements over the past year, we are an organisation with a rich and long 17-year history in the Tweed,” TPS President and Volunteer Coordinator Meredith Dennis said.

“The Management Committee, Volunteers, Nursing staff and National Project Manager have worked very hard to get us to this stage.

“The Tweed Shire has the state’s highest incidence of some cancers and a growing number of people of all ages living with a life-limiting illness. We work in partnership with the local health service, as well as the state and national palliative care organisations to offer home and live-in hospice, volunteer training, education and Sunshine Day support.”

Ms Dennis said the service was not as yet government funded and she encouraged people to visit the TPS website to see what the organisation does and to donate what they can.

“We continually need donations, business sponsors, bequests and patronage of our Murwillumbah Op shops to continue our free services,” she said.
