Butterflies and new life at PCACT

For their 30th anniversary this year our colleagues at Palliative Care Australian Capital Territory (PCACT) published a book of collected memories from people in palliative care.

Butterflies: Stories that celebrate palliative care in the ACT is a beautifully produced collection of anecdotes about people and places; the beginnings of PCACT, the early beginnings of home and hospice care in the ACT, stories from volunteers and reflections on patients.

It was also the year that Julie Elliott stepped into her new role as Assistant General Manager, and the year that PCACT undertook an important service review of their activities.

“We have been working with a consultant, talking with stakeholders, collecting feedback and shaping ideas about what is working and what could work better.”

Julie said she really valued from attending a workshop on Managing Volunteers with Volunteering ACT.

“My background is in community services, and when you work with volunteers some things are the same, and some things are very different.”

“I’m really glad I went to the workshop early-on, the networking and information was really supportive and helped me to make sense of the world of volunteer support.”

In the same way Julie said that the service review will help them understand the opportunities for PCACT in continuing to support people in palliative care in Canberra and environs. More stories for a future book.

Butterflies is available from PCACT for $20, contact [email protected] for more information.
